Promoting Westons’ sponsorship of English Cricket

Friday, May 11th, 2012

Although we may not look like it, we’re actually a pretty sporting bunch here at Together (well, we like Swingball anyway).

So when our dear old chums at Westons Cider asked us to come up with some eye-grabbing new creative to celebrate the sponsorship of the English Cricket Board by their Stowford Press cider, we sprang into action like a ’jaffa’ on a bouncy wicket (that’s a rather good bowl to you and us).

The result of our efforts was this super piece of creative that urges cricket lovers to celebrate their love of the game with a glass of Stowford Press.

You see, it’s not just the Swingball we’re good at.

When BBC news were on the hunt for a branding expert to share their insights, where else would they turn but to our very own brand brainbox, Jonathan?

One of founder partners, Jonathan ‘JT’ Turner was approached yesterday by BBC News in London to lend his invaluable observations to the story that several towns would be competing for the chance to be elevated to city status next year.

And, without even a murmur of hesitation he leapt into action and shared some rather nifty thoughts.

We won’t praise his performance too much though. He already fancies himself as a bit of a Robert Peston.

Good packaging makes me happy

I like tea. Well, who doesn’t like tea? I also like beautiful typography and clever packaging. I especially like it when all of the above is combined to make something wonderful to behold. And so it is with Clipper’s new range of packaging, which has been designed by Big Fish.

Clipper also have a rather lovely website. And as if all that wasn’t enough, the tea tastes good, is made “with pure ingredients and a clear conscience,” and they do lots of fairtrade stuff that is good for their growers. Basically, it’s everything I like about the world.

the last ‘silk’ cut?

Removing branding from cigarette packaging? In my experience nearly as ineffective as putting health warnings and pictures of nasty ailments on the side of a packet. Most of the smokers I know switch off to this stuff – an almost ‘it won’t happen to me’ kind of attitude?

But interestingly enough campaigners believe putting them in plain packets will make smoking less appealing. I have to say, branding did almost add to the ‘cool’ factor when I smoked. You were less likely to band about your cheap nasty packet when a gold, well composed Marlboro pack graced the table.

Don’t get me wrong though, I’m all for discouraging smoking, but surely, making cigarettes ‘under counter’ purchases and almost an anti brand item will only make smoking more attractive? Isn’t it that you always want what your told you cannot have. And, if you make something naughty or dangerous it just adds to the appeal?

Anyway, we could be looking at the end of another era for the tabacco industry, and in the same way we kissed goodbye to the advertising in 2002 we could be looking at the end of branding too. Maybe someone will design pack wraps that you can buy to jazz up a pack. Or maybe the cigarette holder will make a comeback? Who knows, but if they do bring it in it will be interesting to see if a lack of branding does contribute to a fall in smokers in the UK.
