are you a design thinker?

Friday, December 3rd, 2010

I look at lots of design sites for news, views and so much more but this is one I’d like to share. It has all things current and interesting in design, some really interesting articles and is rather pleasing to look at too. Take a look for yourself and add it to your bookmarks.

friends for fun

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010

I use facebook. I don’t deny that I can’t go without looking at it at least three times a day and more often than not a lot more than that. I just like knowing what people are getting up to and keep in touch with what’s going on around me. It’s also an increasingly important part of what we do here at together.

Anyway, as an avid user (and because I do what I do) I’m often on the lookout for new ideas and different ways to interact with facebook and the other day I came across this little gem. It’s a tongue in cheek pokeĀ  at the people on this popular social site who feel the need to ‘collect’ friends in order to prove some misguided notion of popularity (or maybe are just too polite to say no?).

The style is charming and not too overworked, the tone is humourous and quirky without going over the top. I’m a big fan. Check it out for yourself.

Innocent Competition

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010

Not content will supplying us with deliciously fruity smoothie goodness, the chaps at Innocent have broken into the ready meal market with their range of Veg Pots.

Each one contains 3 portions of veg, is satisfyingly filling and they’re actually really healthy. Much better than a prepacked sandwich for your lunch.

Old news this may be, but whilst heating up one of said Veg Pots – Indian Daal Curry, NOM! – I perused the notes inside the packaging (the ready meal’s equivalent of the sleeve notes), and was pleasantly surprised to find the following:

1. lots of tasty tips for how to enjoy/enhance your meal.
2. great ideas for recycling the packaging.
3. a competition to win MORE yummy veg pots.

… all served up in Innocent’s inimitable tongue-in-cheek style.

So come on work chums, let’s all get involved and email the Innocent bods for a chance to win me, sorry, US, some lovely grub.

Email impressyourboss@innocentdrinks.co.uk and simply tell them your phone number, work address and how many people work in your office (max 50!) for your chance to win.

Check out their latest TV ad too, featuring some pretty nifty stop-motion animation work in the medium of vegetables…

HAPPY EATING EVERYONE!

Bring on the WALL

I love Only Connect – BBC 4′s highbrow but bonkers quiz show hosted by the wonderful Victoria Coren – The format is simple. Take two teams of nerds, who then take it in turns to try and work what links a series of words, pictures or pieces of music before the time runs out. Simple you think…but the twist is the answers require some real lateral thinking. The series or ‘connections’ might be song lyric in pictures or the names of men who apprently escaped somewhere by dressing up as women!!

The best bit though – to pick a series of connects they must choose from one of six Egyptian Hieroglyphics!!

Brilliant!!

The online interactive quiz has been a bit of a hit here at the Together Agency where we have a go at stretching our collective brain powers…

So in honor of a new series – I’ve devised a special Together Agency wall

Get connecting!!!

IKEA cat-herding masterclass

Friday, September 10th, 2010

IKEA’s latest TV ad from Mother launches on September 11th, in one of the X-Factor ad slots, and features 100 cats loose in their Wembley store.

Any cat-lovers out there will appreciate the sight of 100 of our furry friends roaming in the nation’s favourite home outfitter. (any cat-phobics will no doubt be watching from behind the sofa!).

This simple ad follows our four-legged friends as they explore the store, playing, fighting and ultimately get really comfy amongst IKEA’s wares, neatly communicating IKEA’s core values of making your house a home.

Simply purrfect :)

It has to be Heinz

Saw this ad again yesterday evening, and it really got me thinking about the power of brands.

A really brave, confident yet subtle advert (not to mention brilliantly executed) in which we’re not shown the product or any branding until the final frame – we’re just shown the space in our everyday lives the product in question occupies, leaving us in no doubt as to what it is.

How many brands can you think of where you could get away with this approach? Bet you could count em on the fingers of one hand.

Count to 10…

What with all the rage-fuelled blog entries today (see contributions from Mssrs Clemmit and Boulton below) it feels like the agency is in need of some serious anger-management.

To help restore some calm and balance, point your eyeballs at this lovely video of some penguins chasing a butterfly…

Look at them. Look at their lovely waddly little walk and their funny flipper wings, and any rage will soon subside.

That’s better.

Start as you mean to go on

I was watching Who Dares Wins the other day- a terrible Lewis Collins film ( The guy from The Professionals that didn’t become Judge John Deed) that exploited the Iranian Embassy Siege that was foiled by the S.A.S. But what made me angry more than the dance sequence that involved someone dressed up as a sexy nuclear bomb was the opening titles.

If you think about it opening titles are like the cover of books, they set the tone for the rest of the film. Personally I’m a sucker for the old screwball comedies of the 50′s and 60′s like Maurice Binders title sequence for ‘Two for the Road’ and David H. DePatie and Friz Freleng’s ‘Pink Panther’ Sequences -styles that have been revisited by Spielberg in ‘Catch Me if You Can’ and Pixars ‘The Incredibles’

So here are some great opening titles that don’t make me angry

Can cows gallop?

Monday, August 9th, 2010

This may have been out for a couple of months now, but deserves another airing for sheer brilliance… that, and the fact that the REO Speedwagon track has just been played on the generic 80s station our office radio is stuck on (deftly proving the power of nostalgic music in advertising!).

I was pondering this ad at the weekend, trying to work out whether cows can actually gallop (perhaps when offered a suitable incentive, like a really nice clump of grass to chew on?) or whether there’s some clever visual trickery going on to create a cow/horse chimera.

Either way, it’s a winner for me – beautifully shot, cinematic in scale, and with an insanely catchy track to make sure it worms its way into your brain for weeks to come.

Thank you cows? No, thank you Muller.
